On 1 January 2014, the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science and the University of Life Sciences merged and became –NMBU, the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. Senior Advisor in Data Management for the Digital Salmon – Ref.no 18/03082
The Department of Animal- and Aquacultural Sciences (IHA), Centre for Integrative Genetics (CIGENE, www.cigene.no), Faculty of Biosciences, at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) is inviting applications for a 2.5-year (with possibility of extension) position as data manager (senior advisor) for the Digital Salmon. You will help build a database which maps out the physiology of salmon and links this to "omics" data, forming a foundation to tackle demanding challenges in aquaculture, management and evolutionary ecology.
This is a unique career opportunity to develop an expertise for which demand is sharply increasing, as national and international funding agencies have begun to require FAIR data management ("findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable") in grant proposals. We welcome applications from a wide range of backgrounds at the intersection of biology and knowledge management.
The successful candidate will join CIGENE, a multidisciplinary genome biology research group possessing expertise in genetics, evolutionary and comparative genomics, bioinformatics and systems biology. Located within the Department of Animal- and Aquacultural Sciences, this group includes 2 full-time professors, 1 associate professor, 11 researchers, 8 PhD students and 9 research technicians. CIGENE (www.cigene.no) has a strong aqua- and agri- research profile, with key strengths in the application of ‘omics’ data to understand the genetic architecture of complex traits. The group wishes to use functional genomics technologies, including gene editing, in order to better understand the biology underlying specific genotype-phenotype associations. CIGENE has excellent wet and dry lab facilities for automated high-throughput omics, and bioinformatics.
The Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences (IHA) provides fundamental, innovative research and practical solutions to improve productivity and sustainability across the agriculture and aquaculture sector. Currently, disciplines within the department include Animal Nutrition and Feed Technology, Ethology and Animal Environment, Breeding and Quantitative Genetics, and Genome Biology.
The main objective of the Faculty of Biosciences is to contribute to the development of sustainable agriculture and food production systems through basic and applied research on plants and animals including fish (aquaculture). The faculty houses Centre for Integrative Genetics (CIGENE) and the research center for Research-based Innovation (SFI) – Foods of Norway.
The faculty is responsible for bachelor- and master programmes in Biology, Animal Science and Plant Science, and international master programmes in Agroecology, Plant Science, Aquaculture, Animal Breeding Genetics and Feed Manufacturing Technology. PhD programmes include Animal Science and Aquaculture, and Plant Sciences. There are currently 480 bachelor and master students, and 90 PhD students, enrolled in these programmes. The faculty has approximately 220 permanent and temporary scientific employees, including technicians, and 18 administrative positions.
The project "Towards the Digital Salmon: from a reactive to a pre-emptive research strategy in aquaculture (DigiSal)" is part of the national consortium for biotechnology, Centre for Digital Life Norway, and a partner in the FAIRDOM foundation for scientific data management according to the FAIR principles: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable.
This is a unique career opportunity for a bioinformatician or similar with an interest in knowledge management, or a librarian with expertise in semantic technologies and an interest in biology. Demand for such expertise is about to skyrocket, as FAIR data management recently became a requirement of grant proposals to the Research Council of Norway and to the European Union. The person employed will learn from the best and be an important team member at the project, Centre, national, and European level.
Effective management of data and model resources is key to making the Digital Salmon a knowledge base of salmon genetics and physiology, interfacing closely with complementary databases, repositories, and research infrastructures such as ELIXIR. This knowledge base is a key deliverable of the Digisal project and the long-term ambition is that it will enable aquaculture industry to quickly address emerging challenges, quickly reanalyzing existing data and identifying knowledge gaps to rapidly acquire required new data.
- Help design the architecture of the Digital Salmon knowledge base, in close interaction with the researchers that will contribute to and benefit from the knowledge base, and with partners that provide technical solutions. Users include bioinformaticians and wet-lab researchers who generate omics data and microscopy images, and systems biologists who develop physiological models e.g. of salmon metabolism.
- Be our contact point with the FAIRDOM consortium, benefitting from community support and training in cutting-edge tools and workflows, and contributing to FAIRDOM's future development.
- Be involved on the national level in Digital Life Norway's development of data and model management.
Qualifications and competence
- PhD or MSc in relevant field of bioinformatics, systems biology, informatics, librarianship, or similar.
- Experience with semantic web standard technologies and semantic annotation.
- Familiarity with knowledge management in cross-disciplinary science.
- Familiarity with relevant European research infrastructures and data or model repositories.
- Basic understanding of mathematical modelling.
The data manager will be central in integrating data and models to facilitate transdisciplinary research. Thus, the following personal characteristics are important:
