I'm Elisa Márquez Zavala, a PhD candidate in Biotechnology at NTNU in Norway, but I’m originally from Mexico. Come along with me as I tell you about my fascinating internship experience at AciesBio.
Stepping into a company setting for the first time, AciesBio proved to be a revelation. As a PhD candidate used to the academic atmosphere at NTNU, the unique atmosphere of this biotech company shocked me. From the Petri dish to the factory, AciesBio's multifaceted approach to microbial technology development showcased a level of integration I had never seen before.
What struck me most was not just AciesBio's expertise in microbial diversity but the diversity within their own team. Experts from various fields seamlessly collaborated, creating an environment where communication and relying on each other were very important. This internal synergy mirrored their approach to external challenges, making the journey a real team effort.
My journey at AciesBio led me into their commitment to sustainability. As I learned how to model biorefineries, assess environmental impacts, and contribute to a circular economy became integral to my role. The company's dedication to innovation aligned with my aspirations, so every step was a step towards a greener future.
Coming from Mexico, my academic stint in Norway gave me a taste of a different culture. However, it was at AciesBio in Slovenia that I truly grasped how to work in a foreign culture, not in an academic setting, but within the fast-paced world of industry. This experience opened my eyes to the different ways that biotech works around the world and helped me understand the collaborative spirit that define global biotech practices.

Within my work at AciesBio, I modeled biorefineries, calculated production costs, and assessed environmental impacts. Beyond the technical skills gained, my experience shed light on the delicate balance between academia and industry, the importance of teamwork, and the value of practical solutions over exhaustive research.
Beyond the professional growth, AciesBio and DLN’s opportunity made memories that transcend the workplace. A snug hoodie, a scholarship that allowed my puppy to accompany me, and the thoughtful gesture of a ride to the airport – these personal touches added warmth to the scientific journey.
I'm leaving AciesBio with not only new skills but also a lot of memories from a truly fascinating internship. It was a journey that crossed borders and explored the rich landscape of biotechnology.
