ParkOme

A database to understand Parkinson’s disease

Highlights 2024

During 2024, our research has shifted into having clinical trials at the core of our activities, providing the basis for our translational research. One highlight of 2024 has been the start of a new clinical trial in atypical parkinsonism, a group of diseases often overlooked and under-represented in research. For us the added value of being part of a transdisciplinary centre is to combine ideas from completely different fields, always integrating the users' perspective.

Research group

The aim of the project is to develop a comprehensive molecular database and network to understand Parkinson’s disease. The team is integrating results from analysis of DNA, DNA-methylation, chromatin-modifications, RNA and protein in brain tissue from healthy persons and individuals with Parkinson's disease. The resulting database will provide new information about causes, disease mechanisms, biomarkers and targets for treatment of this neurodegenerative disease.

Innovation: The project includes considerable technical and methodical innovation to integrate the different types of biological data.

The project is funded by the Norwegian Research Council and the Bergen Research Foundation
